Section 2: Landforms of Southeast Asia

1. Summarize the main points of this section found on pages 689-690.
2. Answer the following question: What is the Ring of Fire? How does the Ring of Fire help farming in much of Southeast Asia?

  1. Southeast Asia has a mainland of peninsulas as well as many islands. The mainland of Southeast Asia is crossed by cordilleras or side by side mountain ranges. Lowlands of fertile river plains and deltas are home to many Southeast Asians. The Ring of Fire is home to many mountainous islands. Since it is part of the Ring of Fire it has many volcanoes but, provides rich soil for farming. Earthquakes are also a con living in the Ring of Fire. In 2004 a tsunami killed more than 300,000 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses.

The Ring of Fire is a whole bunch of tectonic plates that are getting closer and closer causing earthquakes and volcanoes. In 2004 an earthquake caused a tsunami and it killed more than 300,000 people. It stretches from Asia, across the Pacific Ocean and into part of California. The Ring of Fire also helps the people of Asia. The volcanoes make the soil more fertile for farming.

  2. South of China lays Southeast Asia. This area has a mainland of many peninsulas. The countries- Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, lie entirely on Southeast Asia’s mainland. Other countries made of islands or parts of islands include Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines. Both Indonesia and the Philippines are archipelagos. Mainland Southeast Asia is crossed by Cordilleras, mountain ranges that run side by side. Fertile valleys separate these ranges. South and east of the mainland includes the “Ring of Fire” because it holds many active volcanoes. Earthquakes are also common here.

The Ring of fire is a large circle of volcanoes stretching through the mainland of Southeast Asia and over to America. These volcanoes are very active. Besides the danger, these volcanoes are very helpful. They provide rich soil for farmers. This can only lead to more crops grown and a bigger cash crop.

  3. Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam lie entirely on South Asia’s mainland and countries that are made of islands are Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines. Cordilleras are mountain ranges that run side by side. Volcanoes in the Ring of Fire provide rich soil for farming. Earthquakes are a huge challenge for the islands of Southeast Asia. A tsunami in 2004 was cause by an earthquake on the ocean floor and more than 300,000 people died.

The Ring of Fire is a place where earthquakes happen and volcanoes erupt. It helps farming because it provides very rich soil for farming. Because of this farming thrives here. With this kind of soil they can grow many different crops. Farmers in this area can earn a lot of money if they work hard at growing their crops.

  4. Southeast has cordilleras which means mountains ranges that run side by side. Deltas and fertile river plains is where most mainland Southeast Asians live. The islands on the Ring of Fire have many active volcanoes. The volcanoes have rich soil for farming. More dangers include earthquakes and tsunamis.
The Ring of Fire is in the Pacific Ocean and there are many plate movements which cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In 2004 there was a big tsunami that killed more than 300, 000 in the Ring of Fire. They provide rich soil for farming. This means the farmers can plant crops easier. If the crops grow better they can trade and get money or goods for them.

  5. A circle of volcanoes stretching from New Zealand and along the eastern edge of Asia. It has the highest temperatures in the world and is made up of a fault line. The Ring of Fire stretches in a circle along the islands in Asia. Many of the Volcanoes are active and can explode at any time. If you are to live near the ring of fire it can be very hazardless.

The Ring of Fire can help with farming because it creates fertile soil near the volcano. But the soil can over heat if planted in the wrong spot. This can wipe out the whole entire crop. In the event of this happening the farmer (if there) would have to throw water onto the crop in attempt to save them but he would need more people to help the whole entire crop. But this can also damage the soil if there is too much water used.

  6. Southeast Asia is made out of peninsulas and thousands of islands. Some of the mainland countries that are in this region would include Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Then there are the islands which include Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. The mainland is made up of mountain ranges that run side to side called cordilleras. The islands of this region are a part of the Ring of Fire, since they have many active volcanoes. One of the major challenges in this region would be the earthquakes and tsunamis which occur almost every year.

The Ring of Fire is a great ring which has many volcanoes and earthquakes because of the fault lines that occur. The Ring of Fire is not just in this area but it lies all over the world. Some of the biggest earthquakes have happened here like the one on the Indian Ocean Floor which then caused a Tsunami. Even though the Ring of Fire does not seem like a good thing it is. The Ring of Fire provides rich soil for the farmers.

  7. This region has a mainland of peninsulas and many islands. Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam are entirely on Southeast Asia’s mainland. There are some islands that are entirely of partly made up of islands like Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, and Singapore. The Philippines and Indonesia are both archipelagoes. A lot of the mainland has mountains running through them, or cordilleras through them. Fertile plains and deltas separate these mountains. South and East of the mainland are many mountainous and rocky islands.

The Ring of Fire is a big chain of volcanoes and earthquakes formed by big tectonic plates moving around. In 2004, an earthquake caused a deadly tsunami that killed over 300,000 people. It left thousands of homes and businesses destroyed. The Ring of Fire still helps farmers despite all of the bad things it causes. It helps by producing rich soil for farming. Farmers will be able to plant crops easier with this fertile soil.

  8. Southeast Asia consists of a mainland of peninsulas as well as thousands of islands. Several countries lie entirely on Southeast Asia’s mainland these countries include Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. There are also countries that are nearly or entirely made up of islands these countries are Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines. The Philippines and Indonesia are archipelagoes. The Mainland of Southeast Asia is crossed by cordilleras, which are mountain ranges that run side by side. South and East of the mainland however are thousands of mountainous islands. These islands are part of the Ring of Fire which means they hold many active volcanoes. Being in the Ring of Fire also means they experience many earthquakes and therefore tsunamis.

The Ring of Fire is an area that borders the Pacific Ocean where plate movements cause many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Because of the earthquakes there are also many tsunamis. The eruptions have their advantages though despite the dangers. The eruptions leave behind a rich and fertile soil which is great for farming. The earthquakes however have no advantage they just devastate towns and cities and leave many people dead or homeless.

  10. South and east of the mainland are many mountainous islands. These islands are part of the Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is made up of tectonic plates coming together causing many different volcanoes to form. Some of these volcanoes are in clusters, while others are more spread out. Even though these volcanoes are dangerous and active, many people rely on the rich soil for farming. The Ring of Fire is also known for causing many different earthquakes to happen. In 2004 a tsunami caused an earthquake to happen killing more than 300,000 people. Thousands of homes were destroyed along with businesses.

The Ring of Fire is a bunch of volcanic islands that is all over the Pacific Ocean. These volcanoes are very active and very dangerous. These volcanoes make up 75% of the worlds dormant and active volcanoes. Even though these volcanoes are very dangerous, they provide very fertile soil for the farmers to grow great crops. The reason there is so much fertile soil is because of all the eruptions that happen. These eruptions create lava that over time will turn into soil with many rich nutrients. These nutrients make crops and plants better.

  11. Southeast Asia is located south of China. It is made up of a mainland, and thousands of islands. Some countries that are on the mainland are Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Some countries on islands are Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines, and they are all part of the Ring of Fire. Cordilleras, or mountain ranges that run side by side, cut through the mainland of Southeast Asia. Many natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and more deeply affect Southeast Asia.

The Ring of Fire is a giant ring of tectonic plates that are gradually getting closer together causing natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The volcanic eruptions could also be a good thing. When a volcano erupts, the lava pours out onto miles of land surrounding the volcano. The soil in the ground becomes more fertile with the lava being poured on top of it. Therefore, plants are more likely to grow on the fertile land.

  12. In Southeast Asia there are thousands of islands. There two major archipelagos in Southeast Asia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Most of Southeast Asia’s mainland is made up cordilleras, or mountain ranges that run side to side. South of this mainland are thousands of mountainous islands which are parts of the Ring of Fire. In this area there are many earthquakes and volcanoes because of the Ring of Fire. Besides all of these hazards the volcanoes provide very rich soil.

The Ring of Fire is part of the Pacific Ocean and it contains many active Volcanoes. Especially in Southeast Asia there are many volcanoes that are part of the Ring of Fire. Since there are so many volcanoes there are some good things that they provide. Such as very good farming resources like fertile soil. Even though volcanoes are a danger hazard this advantage helps regain what they may have lost.

  13. Most of East Asia is Islands and Peninsulas. Countries like East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei are island countries that are all on islands. In this are there is the ring of fire, it is a circle of volcanoes. This region has many cordilleras; they are mountain ranges side by side. Earthquakes occur often in East Asia because of tectonic plates.

The Ring of Fire holds many active volcanoes. Thousands of mountainous islands in this area are part of the ring of fire. All of the active volcanoes provide rich soil for farming. So agriculture is probably very important on these volcanic islands. But the volcanoes erupt and might kill a couple of people.

  14. South of China lies Southeast Asia. This area has a mainland of peninsulas as well as thousands of islands. Some of the countries lie entirely on Southeastern Asia is Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Mainland Southeast Asia is crossed by cordilleras, or mountain ranges that run side by side. South and east of the mainland are thousands of mountainous islands. They are part of the ring of fire. Earthquakes also challenge the islands of Southeast Asia.

The ring of fire is thousands of mountainous islands. The Ring of Fire holds many active volcanoes. The Ring of Fire is dangerous but it also provides rich soil for farming. The volcanoes that are active are highly dangerous to the people that live near them. One of the active volcanoes is mount Merapi in Indonesia rumbles often, showing signs of eruption.

  15. The area south China is in Southeast Asia. This area has peninsulas as main land’s as well as lots of islands. Some of the mainland peninsulas are Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. These are all archipelagos. The archipelago means that there are a chain of islands. The chains of islands are Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines.

The mainland is cut by cordilleras (mountains that are side by side). Fertile river plains separate the ranges. This area is very fertile, but is very dangerous. Volcanoes create a very fertile farming area. A tsunami in 2004 killed more than 300,000 people. Most of the population lives in mainland Southeast Asia.

  19. Earth quakes and volcanoes are the main reason of death in this region. Another reason for deaths or mad destructions includes the great powerful one and many tsunami. Two major oceans are the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Oceans are used for many trade routes. The most important river is mainly The Huang He (Yellow River).
The Ring of Fire is mainly volcanoes and such. The Ring of Fire is located in the highlands. This provides rich soil for farming. This region borders the Pacific Ocean. Which causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions

  20. Southeast Asia in covered with peninsulas and islands. Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam are some of the many peninsulas. Indonesia, East Timor, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and the Philippines are island countries of the region. Indonesia and the Philippines are both archipelagos. Mainland Southeast Asia however is covered with cordilleras or separate mountain chains that run alongside each other. The cordilleras are mainly separated by fertile river plains or deltas. South and East Asia is made up of many islands. These islands are formed by volcanic activity under the water. There are many islands because South and East Asia are a part of the Ring of Fire. Earthquakes are another dangerous factor of the islands.

  21. Both Indonesia and the Philippines are archipelagoes. The mainland of South East Asia is crossed cordilleras, which is mountain ranges that run side by side. South and East of the mainland are thousands of mountainous islands. They have a lot of volcanoes. Since they have so many volcanoes, they call it the Ring of Fire. Earthquakes are also a type that changes the islands of Southeast Asia.

The Ring of Fire is what they call a lot of places. The reason for that is because there are so many volcanoes. The place that all this is happening is on so many little islands. Despite the dangers, It makes very rich soil for farming.

  22. The Ring of Fire is a ring of volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean consisting of island and peninsulas. The Ring of Fire makes new islands due to the fact that some of the volcanoes are underwater. When the volcanoes erupt ash builds up and get to the point that it comes out of the sea and creates a new island. The volcanoes help Asia’s farmland because it leaves a layer a fertile ash.

  23. Southeast Asia lays South of China. Southeast Asia has many countries that are just made up of islands, like Indonesia, and the Philippines which again are both archipelagos. To the South and East of the mainland are tons of islands. These islands make up part of what is called the Ring of Fire because on many of the islands are volcanoes. This region may have many islands and volcanoes but it also gets hit by many tsunamis. In 2004 it was hit by a great tsunami that killed more than 300,000 people and thousands of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.

The Ring of Fire is a great string of islands with many volcanoes and earthquakes. The Ring of Fire helps farming because it has a lot of rich fertile soil. The Rich soil is very important in farming major crops. It also helps because it is by plenty of water, but some of it is salt water so it is not able to be used. That’s what I think the Ring of Fire helps with farming.

  24. South of china is Southeast Asia this area has peninsulas and thousands of islands. Mainland Southeast Asia’s are crossed by mountain ranges that run side by side. The ring of fire holds many active volcanoes which provide rich soil for farming. Earthquakes cause tsunamis and over lowlands it has killed 300,000 people and washed over more than a dozen countries. Several countries lie completely on Southeast Asia’s mainland.

The ring of fire is a bunch of mountainous islands that holds many active volcanoes. The volcanoes also provide rich soil for farming. The ring of fire gets closer and closer to each other and it pushes the plats together and causes volcanoes and earthquakes. The earthquakes destroy business homes and kill many people.
